Skinny Guy On the Block by lizardman1988 Skinny Guy On the Block by lizardman1988
One of the more common (yet bizarre and cool) snakes in Costa Rica, the Brown Blunt-headed Vine Snake (Imantodes cenchoa). These guys are super thin (their heads are 3x the width of their body) and super long. They eat small lizards and frogs.

edited 3/20/09- cropped the picture slightly to remove some distracting elements from the top.

You can also see this deviation at the group ~DeviantHerps. Check out the page sometime.

Cutiiiie! :D :D :D I like the fact that they're skinny + big head... I imagine this snake going like "guys, lil' help here... Can't lift my head.. too big"

Thanks! These vine snakes are terribly hard to shoot well. Long, slender, and active, they just don't sit well in a camera frame. Imagine photoing a rough green twice the length of the longest you've seen, that's skinner and has the same aptitude of not sitting still.

Oh for sure. I've dealt with captives. I'm heading to AZ on Wednesday, but the way their area was hit by the fires, I don't think I'm gonna bother with them until next year. I hit it hard for 'em last spring for a week, but we were just a little early.

he's got big, soulful eyes, doesn't he? Quite amazing snakes, you really have to see one in person.

its remarkable how hard it is to get a good picture of these, cause they're so LONG. This guy posed just right to have a good mug shot taken of him lol.

Thank you! :D They're such interesting snakes, its quite fun to find them in the wild. If I'm not careful, they might become my favorite group of snakes :omg:

Very nice. Would crop off about half of the top; it has a lot of distracting background elements.

Thanks for the suggestion, that yellow leaf does seem to catch the eye a bit much. I'll see what I can do.

Awesome! Random cool fact - while all snakes have complex, overlapping muscles & tendons, the muscle-tendon systems of Imantodes are so long that each one spans almost 1/7th of their entire body.

They're pretty amazing. They seem impossible, with their long, skinny bodies, huge heads, and ability to hold almost their entire body horizontally in mid-air.

Nice shot! were these from a trip you're back from now, or are these being uploaded as they're taken? I'm jealous that you got to visit South America!
